Ethnic Minority Cancer Awareness Week (EMCAW)

Ethnic Minority Cancer Awareness Week (EMCAW) is taking place between 11th and 17th of July 2011. The theme for this year is increasing awareness and early diagnosis of cancer among ethnic minority communities and groups. The week is organised by a collaboration of leading charities and are aiming to work in a number of cities across England.   The overall aim of our campaign is to maintain the momentum of this event and ensure that cancer awareness amongst ethnic minority groups remains a priority through out the year.

The initiative was launched by Cancer Equality at their ‘Delivering Equality in Cancer Care-A Challenge for All’ conference in 2007. Following this conference, Cancer Equality formed an alliance with a group of leading cancer charities, who have come together to deliver a week of events to raise cancer awareness and improve access to services amongst ethnic minorities.

EMCAW was launched at the House of Commons on the 7th of July 2008. The event was hosted by Sadiq Khan MP and Dr Ian Gibson. Speeches in support of the week were also made by Sir Trevor McDonald and Eddie Nestor.

The launch was an opportunity for MPs, charities and service providers to discuss how cancer services could be improved to meet the needs of ethnic minority communities and groups.
